Bill’s State of Affairs
Forbes Magazine just came out with the 10 Best States for doing business. The criteria is listed in the chart below. Washington State is sixth on the list, and Oregon ninth, which is good news. Utah was clearly number one, and for many reasons. Utah ranks in the top 15 states in each of the six major categories chosen; energy costs in Utah are 31% below the national average and employment growth (growth!) has averaged 0.6% gains the past five years. Employment growth in the U.S. has had a negative number the past five years. Utah’s 5% corporate tax rate is well below its western neighbors. A new study by the Tax Foundation lists Utah as sixth in the nation as far as the tax burden on businesses. Companies like Procter & Gamble, ITT, Adobe Systems, eBay, Oracle, Goldman Sachs, Home Depot and Boeing all announced expansions in Utah this year.

Our entire industry is buzzing about the Toll Brothers/CamWest acquisition. Along with the fairly recent entry of the Richmond American brand, Pulte now building under their own brand and the new MainVue entry, there appears to be a general recognition that Washington State is a good place to be. Well, it is. We are either 13th or 14th in size, depending upon which index is viewed, net migration is positive with future job growth predicted and people like to live here. We are big enough for the national builders to take note of. The customer will win.
