To quote the John Burns group, “Price will get them in the door. Design will close the deal.” As the chart below shows, almost 70% of potential homebuyers want to live in a new home. This slide is part of a major survey conducted by the Burns earlier this year. So what are we doing, as an industry, to get people excited? Value is still important, but it’s design, baby, it’s design, that stirs the emotions and entices people to make the move.

There has been a pronounced slowdown in labor force growth since the 1970’s. For us that are building and selling new homes, we all know that job growth is fuel for our fire. Fewer jobs means less revenue to pay for and finance current and future public sector spending. R & D’s need to get their act together and face the future in a responsible manner. Significant economic change must occur, and that includes entitlements. The chart is from Wells Fargo Economics.
