Bill on the Market

Congrats to Escala on their 100th sale celebration. I thought I was in the middle of a Selling New York episode last Thursday when Erik Mehr and his team hosted a big broker’s open. It was sumptuous, and fun. Oh, but the ‘100th Sale’ handle is incorrect. Escala was already at 105 sales going into the weekend. On another note, my favorite real estate publication, the Daily Journal of Commerce, ran an evocative article about an emerging generation of renters. When the housing bubble burst four years ago, 31.6 percent of households were renters. Now, it’s at 33.6 percent and rising. Many of the new renters are former owners who lost homes to foreclosure or bankruptcy. In response, the pace of apartment development is surging, up 115 percent from its October 2009 low. But, let not your heart be troubled. As rents rise (they are!), the power of home ownership will strongly reassert itself. A recent study by NAR, and others, tell us that home ownership is still in the hearts and minds of our customers.
